They consist of a tough outer fibrous layer and a soft, gel-like inner core.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"320\" data-end=\"457\">A simple way to imagine them is like small jelly-filled donuts\u2014perfectly sized to fit between the vertebrae and absorb mechanical stress.<\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"13y7uer\" data-start=\"464\" data-end=\"497\"><strong>How Does a Disc Bulge Develop?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"499\" data-end=\"615\">Over time, intervertebral discs undergo age-related changes: they lose hydration, become stiffer, and less flexible.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"617\" data-end=\"803\">As a result, the outer layer of the disc may begin to bulge evenly around its circumference\u2014similar to a burger patty that is slightly too large for its bun. This is called a disc bulge.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"805\" data-end=\"985\">A bulging disc does not necessarily involve the entire circumference, but typically at least a quarter or even half of it. In these cases, only the outer fibrous layer is affected.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"987\" data-end=\"1067\">This is <strong data-start=\"995\" data-end=\"1031\">not considered a disc herniation<\/strong>, and it may not cause any symptoms.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4432 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/fajdalomklinika.hu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/porckorong.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"546\" height=\"1032\" \/><\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"13qvggr\" data-start=\"1074\" data-end=\"1107\"><strong>What Causes a Disc Herniation?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1109\" data-end=\"1240\">A disc herniation occurs when the tough outer layer of the disc develops a tear, allowing the softer inner gel to protrude outward.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1242\" data-end=\"1355\">This can be compared to a burger patty pushing out through a small gap in the bun\u2014localized, but more pronounced.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1357\" data-end=\"1530\">This condition is a result of spinal instability, as discussed in the general section. Due to micro-instability, the disc becomes overloaded and bulges at its weakest point.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1532\" data-end=\"1589\">Symptoms depend on what the protruding disc is affecting:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1590\" data-end=\"1735\">\n<li data-section-id=\"ynteys\" data-start=\"1590\" data-end=\"1627\">\n<p data-start=\"1592\" data-end=\"1627\">It may be completely asymptomatic<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1ol9q65\" data-start=\"1628\" data-end=\"1675\">\n<p data-start=\"1630\" data-end=\"1675\">It may cause <a href=\"https:\/\/fajdalomklinika.hu\/en\/conditions-we-treat\/spinal-pain\/discogenic-pain\/\">discogenic (disc-related) pain<\/a><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"z5v28h\" data-start=\"1676\" data-end=\"1735\">\n<p data-start=\"1678\" data-end=\"1735\">It may compress a nerve root, leading to <a href=\"https:\/\/fajdalomklinika.hu\/en\/conditions-we-treat\/spinal-pain\/radicular-pain\/\">radicular pain<\/a><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1737\" data-end=\"1950\">It is important to note that a disc herniation seen on MRI is <strong data-start=\"1799\" data-end=\"1832\">not always the source of pain<\/strong>. Many people have disc herniations\u2014or even extrusions\u2014visible on imaging without experiencing any back or neck pain\u00b9.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1952\" data-end=\"2076\">This is why a thorough clinical evaluation is essential. Without an accurate diagnosis, effective treatment is not possible.<\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"zou9rf\" data-start=\"2083\" data-end=\"2108\"><strong>How Can it be Treated?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2110\" data-end=\"2205\">Treatment of a disc herniation depends on symptom severity and the extent of nerve involvement.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2207\" data-end=\"2403\">At PSI Pain Clinic, our goal is to reduce pain using targeted, minimally invasive procedures\u2014while avoiding major spine surgery whenever possible.
